How Much is Car Insurance?

How much is health insurance in your state? You can check out the TL;DR version of this in the first sections, then scroll down for a more detailed description of your state’s requirements and average premium.

Required Car Insurance Coverage

To legally drive, you need a certain amount of car insurance coverage. Companies usually designate it this way:

## / ## / ##

Bodily injury liability limit (per person) / (per accident) / property injury liability limit

For example, Alabama’s minimum coverage limit is 25 / 50 / 25. This means:

$25,000 – how much the company will pay per person injured in the accident

$50,000 – how much the company will pay in total for that accident

$25,000 – how much the company will pay to repair what you damaged, if you are held liable (legally responsible)

Let’s call this the minimum requirement. Most states require this coverage in total.

Other states require, in addition:

  • Uninsured motorist coverage. This helps you pay for repairs, medical bills, and other expenses if the other party is held liable but he or she has no coverage.
  • Personal injury protection. This helps you pay for any injuries to yourself in the case of an accident where you are held liable. Liability coverage does not pay your own bills.

For any states that require all three (minimum requirement, uninsured motorists coverage, personal injury protection), let’s call it the full package.

On average, the minimum coverage requirement for any state is 23.75 / 46.06 / 17.35, or a total of $87,160 in total policy worth. This, with a minimum average premium of $562 / year ($47 / month), is quite affordable.

But is it enough?

Ideal Car Insurance Coverage

As all insurance works, you will need to shell out if your insurance coverage falls short of your actual needs. Let’s take a look at how much coverage is recommended, and the average premium price.

50 / 100 / 50

This is the minimum recommended coverage. If you have an older vehicle, come from a lower income tier, and have less assets to defend, this might work for you. The average premium cost is $640 / year ($53.5 / month).

100 / 300 / 100

If you have a higher-value vehicle, come from at least a middle-tier income bracket, and have more assets to protect, you might want to extend your coverage further. This is the ideal minimum coverage. The average premium price is $714 / year ($59.5 / month)

Challenge the Minimum

It’s always tempting to meet the minimum legal requirements for car insurance and leave the rest of it to take care of itself. Instead, take the challenge and see how well you can budget for what you, as a motorist, actually need on a regular basis.
